LATEST NEWS about IKN airport in East Kalimantan. Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi said that the IKN Airport in East Kalimantan will be commercialized before 2028. The operational target of IKN Airport in East Kalimantan before 2028 is in line with the government’s plan to operate IKN as the political capital in 2028.
“The latest statement by the Minister of Transportation regarding the IKN airport in East Kalimantan, if it moves in 2028, then it is hoped that it (IKN airport) will be completed before that,” said Dudy when met after a press conference at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Saturday (March 1), 2025.
However, Dudy could not confirm when the name change of IKN airport would take place. He said the name change has not yet been discussed with relevant ministries and institutions.
“Yes, we have to respond by looking at the regulations to see if it is possible for us to change it. I haven’t discussed (the revision of the presidential regulation), if not with me yet. I’ll look into it later,” Dudy said.
It is known that the name of the IKN VVIP airport has not been changed, it is still in accordance with Presidential Regulation Number 31 of 2023. In fact, as quoted by kontan.co.id, the plan to change the name of the airport so that it can become a public airport has been echoed since 2024. With the name change, the function of this airport has also changed to serve not only VVIP flights but also the public.
“Regarding the progress of the IKN airport development, on the land side, the Nusantara International Airport project in the capital of the archipelago (IKN), East Kalimantan Province has been completed. On the land side, this includes VVIP and VIP terminals, Air Traffic Control (ATC) towers, administrative offices and places of worship. Meanwhile, some additional works such as the drainage system are scheduled to be completed by March 2025.
According to Hutama Karya Executive Vice President (EVP) Secretary Adjib Al Hakim, said the company is committed to completing this project to the highest standards. This will enable it to support connectivity and government activities in the future IKN.
“To ensure the efficiency and quality of construction, Hutama Karya has adopted Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology to improve the accuracy of work calculations and monitor progress in real time,” he said.
He explained that thanks to the application of this technology, the IKN VVIP Airport Building project won 1st place in the Building category at the 3rd ASEAN BIM Competition 2024 held in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The completion of this project faced a number of challenges, one of which was high rainfall.
“The heavy rainfall caused waterlogging at several points in the project area because the drainage channels were not yet connected to the airside facilities. Once operational, the IKN VVIP Airport is expected to be the main catalyst for economic growth in the surrounding area, as well as strengthening the company’s portfolio in the field of aviation infrastructure,” concluded Adjib.
