TOURISM INDUSTRY IMPLEMENTS ESG TO STRENGTHEN SUSTAINABLE

INDONESIAN Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana encouraged tourism industry players to implement Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles as part of their strategy to strengthen competitiveness and realize sustainable Indonesian tourism.

While opening Eco Tourism Week – Wonderful Indonesia Sustainable Tourism Industry Forum (WI-STIF) 2026 at The Meru, Bali, Saturday (05/30), Tourism Minister Widiyanti stated that the implementation of strong ESG principles is increasingly becoming a crucial factor in attracting investment. Currently, investors and international partners are not only considering economic aspects, but also placing significant emphasis on environmental sustainability, social impact, and good governance.

“We hope that more tourism business players will be motivated to implement ESG principles and view sustainability as a long-term strategic investment,” said Tourism Minister Widiyanti.

According to Widiyanti, the government continues to take various concrete steps to encourage the development of sustainable tourism in various destinations. These efforts include the development of environmentally friendly infrastructure, such as a waste management system in Labuan Bajo, the revitalization of tourist destinations like the Pangururan Waterfront City area on Lake Toba, as well as various environmental restoration programs and studies of the carrying capacity of tourist areas.

The Ministry of Tourism is also implementing the Clean Tourism Movement (Gerakan Wisata Bersih) priority program as part of an effort to raise public awareness of the importance of cleanliness and sanitation in tourist destinations.

This program aligns with the Indonesia ASRI (Safe, Healthy, Clean, and Beautiful) Movement initiated by President Prabowo Subianto to strengthen national waste management and create a cleaner, healthier, and more comfortable environment for both the public and tourists.

“Therefore, I hope this forum can strengthen collective awareness of the importance of sustainable tourism and encourage all stakeholders to play a more active role in building cross-sector collaboration,” she said.

Most importantly, Widiyanti concluded that this forum can generate innovation, partnerships, and real solutions to accelerate Indonesia’s transformation towards a more sustainable tourism future. [traveltext.id]
