INDONESIA BECOMES THE 2nd MOST POPULAR DESTINATION FOR EUROPEAN TRAVELERS

DIGITAL travel platform Agoda has released a ranking of European travelers’ interest in Asian destinations based on accommodation search data from April to June 2026 for trips in July and August.

Indonesia rose to second place this year, displacing Japan after holding third place in 2025, demonstrating Indonesia’s growing appeal among European travelers planning summer vacations in Asia.

For European travelers, July and August are the peak summer season and the busiest travel period, when school breaks and vacation plans begin to materialize. Thailand remains the most searched-for Asian destination for European travelers for the second consecutive year, followed by Indonesia and Japan.

These findings are based on Agoda accommodation search data from European travelers searching for accommodations for summer vacations in various destinations across Asia. Indonesia’s rise from third place last year to second place this year reflects the continued high global interest in Indonesian destinations, led by Bali, as well as growing interest in other destinations across the Indonesian archipelago. This shows that Indonesia’s appeal is expanding, not just limited to well-known destinations.

In addition to Bali, Lombok and Jakarta are also among the most sought-after Indonesian destinations by European tourists. This reflects the growing interest in a variety of travel options, from beach vacations and cultural experiences to city tourism.

Bali also maintained its position as the second most sought-after destination in Asia by European tourists. This further strengthens the Island of the Gods’ enduring appeal and contributes to Indonesia’s rise in the regional rankings.

In Asia, Japan remains in the top three and continues to attract strong interest from various European countries. Vietnam rose from fifth to fourth place, confirming its increasingly strong position as a must-visit destination. Meanwhile, Malaysia completes the top five.

France Leads European Tourist Interest in Indonesia
France remains the largest European country for Indonesia based on accommodation searches, followed by the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain. These five countries continue to be the main drivers of European tourist interest in Indonesia.

Beyond the top five European countries most interested in traveling to Indonesia, Agoda also noted that Finland recorded the fastest growth in travel interest to Indonesia among European countries this summer (+73%), followed by Hungary (+45%). This indicates the emergence of new European countries that are expected to show continued growing interest in travel to Indonesia.

According to Gede Gunawan, Senior Country Director for Indonesia at Agoda, Indonesia’s rise to the second most searched destination in Asia reflects the country’s growing appeal among European travelers.

“Beyond Bali, continued interest in destinations like Lombok and Jakarta shows that travelers are increasingly eager to explore more of Indonesia. We are also pleased to see demand coming from both established and emerging European countries like Finland and Hungary,” he said.

He added that as travel experts in Asia, we are excited to help more travelers discover the best experiences in Indonesia, wherever their travels take them.” [sources/photo special]
