BI TO PRIORITIZE ECONOMIC STABILITY UNDER NEW GOVERNOR DESTRY

INCOMING Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI), Destry Damayanti, affirmed that maintaining economic stability remains the primary focus of the central bank amid continuing global market uncertainty.

Speaking at the House of Representatives (DPR) building in Jakarta on Tuesday (09/1), 2026, Destry emphasized that maintaining the stability of the rupiah exchange rate and domestic inflation will lay the groundwork for sustainable, higher national economic growth.

“Our stance remains unchanged: stability is the priority. Given the ongoing high level of global uncertainty, maintaining stability remains key for us,” Destry said.

Destry noted that while the new leadership will maintain successful policies established by the previous administration, monetary strategy will remain dynamic and adaptive to evolving market conditions.

The announcement follows the official confirmation by the DPR RI Plenary Meeting approving Destry Damayanti as BI Governor, Aida S. Budiman as Senior Deputy Governor, and Solikin M. Juhro as Deputy Governor for the 2026–2031 tenure.

The board members are scheduled to take their official oaths of office at the Supreme Court on Wednesday (September 2).

Central to the incoming governor’s strategy is deepening coordination with the central government to ensure fiscal and monetary policy alignment.

“As the government pursues expansionary fiscal plans, Bank Indonesia stands ready to support those initiatives. Open communication is essential to maintaining a harmonious fiscal-monetary balance moving forward,” Destry stated, highlighting her overarching vision of “Red and White Synergy” designed to enhance public welfare without compromising institutional independence.

Key joint initiatives will primarily focus on inflation control through targeted interventions alongside the government to manage volatile food prices from the supply side—an area beyond the reach of monetary policy alone.

Additionally, the central bank plans to expand local currency transactions (LCT) by strengthening cooperation with government bodies and private sector actors to reduce reliance on hard currencies in international trade.

To foster high-quality economic growth, Bank Indonesia will also partner closely with lawmakers, placing a dedicated emphasis on supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Following Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony, the newly appointed Board of Governors will immediately assign operational portfolios to ensure a seamless operational transition for the central bank. [antaranews]
