THE INDONESIAN Ministry of Tourism reminds all business actors, operators and others to uphold the value of conscious travel so that every tourist destination in Indonesia pays attention to all aspects regarding standard safety procedures so that appropriate policies or strategies can be formulated.
According to Fadjar Hutomo, Expert Staff for Tourism Crisis Management of Tourism Ministry when met after attending the ‘Ngoprek’ (Discussing Tourism and Creative Economy) event in Batu, Malang, East Java Park, (9/15), 2026 with the theme ‘Safety Tourism, Sustainable Future: Building Safe, Educative and Sustainable Tourism’ said, in fact I would say that conscious tourism is not only owned by tourism industry players, but we also in general must have an awareness of safety when traveling.
“Currently we are in one of the favorite tourist destinations. I think Jatim Park is the choice of not only the people of East Java, but has also become the choice of the Indonesian people. Congratulations also to Jatim Park on its 25th year, becoming more beautiful, more mature,” he said.
Fadjar Utomo explained that the issue of safety tourism, in my opinion, is a very important issue. Coincidentally, as an Expert Staff for Crisis Management, our awareness of safety is being given a very high level of attention. Transport accidents, although not directly related to tourist attractions, are very influential. Tourism is about perception. When an area is perceived as unsafe because of a lot of crime or accidents, of course this becomes a barrier to sustainable tourism.
“Of course, this is very cross-sectoral. The Tourism Ministry do not have authority over everything, but this is an area of concern for us because consumers’ negative perceptions will have consequences for tourism. There are bus accidents, ships, drowning of tourists, or natural disasters such as eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis. This is where the safety aspect becomes very important. The Minister has determined that tourism safety is one of the priority programs. In essence, tourism is not only about beauty, but also safety,” he stated.
He also added, so far, in Batu Tourism City there have not been many incidents related to safety aspects. This is different from some reports in other cities, such as water slides collapsing or workers being injured. Things like drowning while snorkeling, falling while taking selfies in dangerous places, these are things that still happen frequently.
“We have to see it as an ecosystem. There are regulations, implementation and supervision. Then human resources, both from business actors and the role of the media, are to provide safety awareness education to the public. Many accidents start from disobedience or stubbornness by tourists, for example being told to wear a life jacket but refusing,” he affirmed.
Regarding regulations, the Minister of Tourism Regulation concerning Tourism Business Standards has regulated operational standards in detail. We also refer to the Search and Rescue Law no. 29 of 2014, which requires risk tourism service providers to provide competent human resources in the field of prevention and relief. If negligence occurs which results in loss of life, there are legal sanctions including corporate liability, not just administrative sanctions. Jatim Park itself is very good because it is protected by insurance, which ensures the safety of the ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Rio Imam Sendjojo, Director of East Java Park Group, said that we carry out applications both internally and externally. Our employees are given training and certified by institutions from business certification institute (LSU_ and ministries. We also certify the suitability of the rides.
“For conservation, because we have an animal reserve, we conserve animals from various regions, including Papua. There is learning there. At Dino Park, visitors learn about prehistory. At the World Music Museum, visitors learn about music as a universal language. At Jatim Park, there is learning for everything, including technology-based tourism. We continue to try to equip it so that people who have recreation in Batu City feel that the safety standards are similar to those abroad,” he said.
He explained, we always discuss environmentally friendly concepts. We use electricity and water efficiently in accordance with environmental regulations which are currently very strict. Tourism cannot stand alone, it needs collaboration with the government, surrounding communities, communities and the media. We must care about the local ecosystem.
However, when asked about his future plans he immediately answered “It is our dream to make Batu a complete National Tourist City. We also want to attract more foreign tourists to Batu City. We need local government policy support to make this happen”.
