SPORT TOURISM OPPORTUNITIES TO GENERATE POST-PANDEMIC TOURISM

SPORTS tourism is one of the segments that will be focused on being worked on and developed in an effort to revive the tourism sector and the creative economy after the COVID-19 epidemic.

According to Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Wishnutama Kusubandio, said that the potential for sports tourism in Indonesia is very large, so that it is believed to be an attraction for both domestic and foreign tourists.

“As stated by President Joko Widodo, sports can also be one of the boosters of the national economy. “Sport tourism has become a new tourism trend with a very wide and very large market which will provide a multiplier effect on people’s economic activities,” he said.

He added that international sports events could become an attraction for Indonesian tourism. Like the Asian Games, Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen, Ironman Bintan, Jogja International Heritage Walk, Borobudur Marathon and many others.

“One of the international sporting events that the government will target is the implementation of the MotoGP 2021 which will take place at the Mandalika circuit, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. The official MotoGP website recently included a list that the Indonesian GP will be held in the 15th series after the Malaysia and Thailand series,” Wishnutama noted.

For that, Wishnutama invites the public and industry to prepare themselves well. Especially in implementing CHSE-based health protocols (Cleanliness, Health, Safety and Environment) which will become a need for tourists in the era of adapting to new habits.

Not long ago, the Ministry of Tourism also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Industry to develop the potential for sports tourism and create sport events to attract tourist visits to tourist destinations in Indonesia.

“This pandemic situation must be faced with a comprehensive, targeted and collaborative strategy,” he said.

Meanwhile, President Joko Widodo said that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, various national and international sports competitions must be eliminated and the holding of them should be rescheduled.
