MINISTRY of Tourism and Creative Economy is collaborating with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) to develop geopark tourist destinations in Indonesia.

Geopark is an integrated geographical area by prioritizing the protection of sustainable geological landscapes and sites and maintaining a balance between conservation, education, and the economic welfare of the community. Indonesia has around 40 geo-heritage spread across various provinces.

In a meeting with ESDM Minister Arifin Tasrif at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Office, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (3/2), the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, said the meeting discussed the tourism potential in geopark locations in the country. We agreed to focus first on development in several (geoparks) that are close to centralized destinations.

Sandiaga also revealed that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) will provide support for infrastructure procurement in tourist destination areas. I convey hope from the tourism sector to make more use of new and renewable energy.

On the same occasion, Minister of ESDM, Arifin Tasrif stated that this collaboration was a form of support to revive the tourism sector and the creative economy that was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In principle, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources supports the promotion of our tourism potential so that Indonesia will be better known but also supported by good infrastructure,” Arifin said.

He explained that of the 40 geoparks in Indonesia, five of them have been designated as global geoparks by UNESCO. The five are Geopark Batur, Bali; Gunung Sewu Geopark, DI Yogyakarta-Central Java-East Java; Rinjani Geopark, West Nusa Tenggara; Geopark Ciletuh Pelabuhanratu, West Java; and Toba Caldera Geopark, North Sumatra.
