EARTH is a home that we borrow to be passed on to future generations. As residents, everyone has a moral responsibility to keep the earth clean and healthy.
In commemoration of Earth Day which falls on April 22, see how to reduce the amount of garbage at home that you can practice on your own, quoted from the official broadcast of SIG Indonesia, Thursday (22/4).
First, compost organic waste. You can collect waste generated from organic materials such as food products, paper and cardboard products. Turn it into compost so that it can be used again. Make compost using composter, a container to turn organic waste into compost.
Put organic waste into the composter, make sure the contents are moist. When loading cardboard or paper waste, make sure it is chopped into small pieces. If necessary, pour in enough bioactivator liquid to produce better compost. Leave it for a few weeks. Later compost can be used for a home garden or potted plants that you have. Compost bins can help reduce the amount of daily organic waste at home.
Second, change habits. Start small, like reducing the use of single-use plastic waste. Try to carry a cloth bag with you every trip that can be used repeatedly. If you want to snack, bring your own lunch box and put the food you want to buy in there without having to use single-use plastic. Also bring your own refillable drinking bottle to reduce plastic bottle waste.
Third, plan the menu and food portions before it is processed in the kitchen so that no food is wasted. Finish the food that is in front of you so as not to be wasted. If there is anything left, store it properly according to the type of food so that nothing has to be thrown away due to stale or rot.
Fourth, choose foods and beverages with the right cardboard packaging. When shopping for food and beverages in cardboard packaging, look for cartons that are made from renewable paperboard. [antaranews/photo special]
