SANDIAGA UNO: IT IS TIME FOR TOURISM & CREATIVE ECONOMY TO RISE UP

MINISTER of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno said it was time for the tourism industry and creative economy in the country to rise after being shaken by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak for more than a year.

“It’s been more than a year that we are facing a pandemic, it’s time for tourism and the creative economy to rise,” Sandiaga said during a visit to the tourist village of Krebet wooden batik crafts, Sendangsari Village, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), Monday (26/4).

Minister Sandiaga said that the revival of tourism and the creative economy can be started from tourism and craft villages, therefore the Ministry will gercep or accelerate (move quickly), geber or move (joint movement) and gaspol (work on all local potentials) so that they can immediately rise up and recover.

“So we will go directly to the tourist villages, because we are entrusted with 244 tourist villages, but it seems the demand is more than 244 villages, so we will take strategic steps which will immediately coordinate with our activists,” he said.

Sandiaga explained that his ministry’s duties were until 2024, that tourist villages in Indonesia would be the driving force for the revival of Indonesia’s economic recovery through its creative and tourism economy.

“So it is no longer from top to bottom, but now we are from the bottom up, we go straight down, because here (in the tourist village of Krebet) I see the economic potential of crafts, batik on a mask. And now 14.9% of GDP ( creative gross domestic product in crafts,” he pointed out.

Sandiaga also emphasised labour and labour intensive activities, because now many people have lost their livelihoods since the COVID-19 pandemic was difficult.

“This tourist village also has the ability to create jobs. And this year is the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development, so that later there will be activities such as workshops, incubations and hopefully we will continue to put it forward,” Sandiaga concluded.
