THE HOKKAIDO FOSSIL MUSEUM IN COLLABORATION WITH POKEMON

THE National Museum of Nature and Science’s ‘Pokemon Fossil Museum’ traveling exhibition will open at the Mikasa City Museum in Hokkaido from July. Visitors can learn about ancient creatures along with characters from the Pokemon video game.

The exhibition will feature about 30 specimens of fossils and other prehistoric creatures that belong to the museum. The fossils will be displayed side by side with the Pokemon characters that resemble them. Their physical characteristics and skeletons will be compared.

The main character of this traveling exhibition, Pikachu, will appear through illustrations at the exhibition venue to explain the contents of the exhibition to visitors. At the suggestion of the museum’s chief researcher, Daisuke Aiba, the exhibition was fully supported by Pokemon Co.

Since he was a child, Aiba has been interested in Pokemon’s “diverse worldview” and he’s been thinking of the idea for this collaborative exhibition since curating in 2015.

The traveling exhibition will be held at the Mikasa City Museum from July 4 to September 20, then displayed in other locations until summer 2023.

“I would love to have Pokemon help people get interested in science and paleontology,” said Aiba. [antaranews/photo special]
