LUIS VUITTON UNVEILS UNISEX CHARLIE SNEAKER HIGH-TOP @IDR16 MILLION

LUIS Vuitton launches Charlie, a unisex sneaker made using 90% recycled and eco-friendly materials.

“Charlie is the result of collaboration between our marketing division, environmental division, our production site in Italy and our suppliers. This allows us to test and source environmentally friendly raw materials,” said Christelle Capdupuy, head of global sustainability at LV.

The soles of Charlie’s shoes are made of at least 94% recycled rubber. The upper of the shoe is made up of a fine, grainy synthetic material, manufactured from recycled polyester and a layer of biopolyoli, a corn-based plastic.

The back, tongue and LV logo are made with Econyl regenerated nylon which is made from nylon waste such as fishing nets, fabric scraps and industrial plastics.

“We can produce shoes with low environmental impact and raw materials that meet the requirements of quality, durability and comfort,” said Cadupuy.

Although Vuitton’s sustainable product offerings are still small, this effort continues to grow, in line with the commitments in the sustainable brand development plan entitled ‘Our committed journey’ in September 2020. By 2025, Vuitton plans to switch to 100% renewable energy at its manufacturing and logistics sites, and requires all products to follow environmentally friendly designs.

Capdupuy said 52% of Vuitton’s raw materials were sourced responsibly by the end of 2020. Among these raw materials were 78% leather from a certified “Leather Working Group” tannery and 67% certified cotton.

The Charlie sneaker will be available in sizes US 3 to 13 for US$1,080 (around IDR15 million) for the low-top version and US$1,130 (around IDR16 million) for the high-top version.

The packaging box is also made of 100% recycled cardboard that can be used as a shopping bag; the handle straps are made of Tencel fiber which is a renewable source of wood. [antaranews/photo special]
