AFFECTED BY THE PANDEMIC, LION AIR GROUP LAID OFF AROUND 8,050 EMPLOYEES

THE COVID-19 pandemic, which is still ongoing today, has made it difficult for all businesses. One of them is an airline from the Lion Air Group which laid off around 8,050 employees or equivalent to 35% of the total number of 23,000 employees.

According to Lion Air Group Corporate Communication Danang Mandala Prihantoro siad, Lion Air Group laid off around 8,050 employees following the decline in flights due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lay off employees due to market conditions and the decreasing number of passengers, resulting in a decrease in the number of flying frequencies as well.

“Under these conditions, the number of work production with human resources does not match. Therefore, within the required period of time, Lion Air Group announces the reduction of the workforce by laying off employees with the status of not being laid off,” he said in a press release, Saturday (7/31).

Danang explained, Lion Air Group will try to help support living expenses according to the company’s ability. Then, he said that while he was sent home, virtual (online) training would be held according to their respective sections. This recovery scheme is taken to maintain business continuity and make the business in the right sector.

“The condition of income is very minimal, there are still financial commitments that must be met so that there are travel restrictions and a temporary reduction in operational frequency on certain flight routes and the costs that must be borne are still quite large,” he noted.

This tough decision, he continued was taken with the main aim of concentrating on an effective and efficient manner in line with maintaining a sustainable business so that the company is maintained. Then, streamline the company’s operations, reduce expenses and restructure the organization in the midst of flight operational conditions that have not returned to normal from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
