PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: JAKARTA MAY SINK IN 10 YEARS DUE TO SEA LEVEL

THE DANGER of global warming became the main issue of the speech of the President of the United States (US) Joe Biden in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, recently. In his speech, he reminded again about climate change and global warming which could change national strategic doctrines.

Biden added that intelligence services will be an important element for US power as it confronts new challenges and hybrid threats. The impact of global warming can melt polar ice and raise sea levels.

“If, in fact, sea levels rose another two and a half feet (about 0.7 meters), you would see millions of people migrating, fighting over fertile land,” President Biden said.

In addition, he also mentioned the prediction of the sinking of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, which will sink in 10 years due to rising sea levels.

“What happens in Indonesia if the forecast is right that, in the next 10 years, they may have to move the capital because it will sink?” Biden said.

“That’s important. This is a strategic question as well as an environmental question. Even in Central Africa, people are willing to kill each other thousands for the arable land that is shrinking due to global warming. In addition, the warming temperature of the earth also has an effect on the Arctic Ocean, which was once cold and difficult to access,” US President remarked.

He added that a warming Arctic is dramatically opening up competition for resources that were once inaccessible. The Arctic Ocean is now a bone of contention for many countries to exploit its natural resources because it becomes easier to access due to global warming. This is a threat to the sustainability of the ecosystem there as well as increasing the threat of climate change.

“That’s what I mean about changing the world. What will happen to our strategic doctrine in the next 2, 5, 10, 12 years, when you can conquer the North Pole without an icebreaker?” President Biden concluded. [antaranews/photo special]
