THE TOYOTA Mirai set a Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled by a hydrogen-fueled electric vehicle, with just one refueling at the start of the tour.
The car managed to travel 845 miles or 1,360 kilometers on the Southern California loop in August, as quoted from CarsCoops, Saturday (10/9).
According to Michael Empric of Guinness World Records, he was ready to validate that the Mirai’s fuel tank was not opened at all during the two-day journey, 23 to 24 August. The tank was only filled once at the start of the five-minute tour, according to Toyota.
The journey begins at the Toyota Technical Center in Gardena, California, with Wayne Gerdes at the wheel and co-pilot Bob Winger in the passenger seat. On the first day, they moved 761 kilometers south of their starting point, namely San Ysidro. Then, head back north via Santa Monica and Malibu along the Coast Highway before heading back to Gardena.
On the second day, they were driving through rush hour traffic on the San Diego freeway between Los Angeles and Orange County. They returned to Gardena after driving 598 kilometers. After driving for two days, they managed to achieve an efficiency rating of 152 MPGe.
“The journey of the Toyota Mirai without the need for refueling showcases the power of electric fuel technology. The technology and ingenuity of the Toyota team has created a historic moment,” said Empric.
The Toyota Mirai consumes 5.65 kilograms of hydrogen and does not emit CO2 directly. Toyota estimates that a standard car will emit about 301 kilograms of CO2 over the same distance. [antaranews]
