UAE INVESTMENT IN ACEH SIGNALS THE REVIVAL OF THE TOURISM SECTOR: SANDIAGA

THE INDONESIAN Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy considers that investment in the tourism sector of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Banyak Island, Aceh is a sign of revival to build the tourism sector and creative economy.

According to the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno in Banda Aceh, Tuesday (10/18) said we want this as a signal of awakening, and the beginning of the spirit to build our tourism and creative economy. This is the largest in history, and we hope that this investment will prosper the people of Aceh.

He explained that the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy continues to coordinate with the Aceh Government in terms of accelerating the realization of the US$500 million UAE investment in Pulau Banyak, Aceh Singkil Regency.

“We are also preparing all the necessary administrative equipment, and the readiness of the central and regional governments to welcome the jumbo investment, which is planned for the signing of the investment agreement in Abu Dhabi in October 2021,” he said.

He explained that it was planned that the Governor of Aceh would go to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates for the signing in front of the President (Joko Widodo).

Previously, an economic observer from Syiah Kuala University, Dr Muhammad Nasir, assessed that the UAE’s investment plan in Pulau Banyak could increase job opportunities in Aceh and have a positive impact on Aceh’s economic growth.

“This investment is expected to increase job opportunities in Aceh, with the ultimate goal of contributing to reducing poverty which has been relatively high in Sumatra,” said Muhammad Nasir.

Based on a report from Bank Indonesia, the open unemployment rate (TPT) in Aceh in February 2021 was 6.30%. It is hoped that with the addition of investment, the unemployment rate can continue to decrease.

In the second quarter of 2021, gross fixed capital formation or investment in Aceh grew by 1.85% year on year (yoy) or an increase compared to the previous quarter which grew by 1.59% (yoy).

“The acceleration of investment performance is in line with the improving economy, which causes business players to be optimistic in investing,” said the alumni of Georgia State University, USA & University of Bonn, Germany.

The UAE’s planned investment of US$500 million in Pulau Banyak can strengthen the contribution of several economic sectors such as the tourism, hotel and restaurant sectors, transportation, trade, services, and can even increase the contribution of other related sectors. [antaranews]
