TOYOTA GAZOO INTRODUCES THE GR COROLLA WITH A 3-CYLINDER TURBO ENGINE

TOYOTA Gazoo Racing (TGR) introduced the GR Corolla which carries a 1600cc three-cylinder turbo engine, in California, USA, on Thursday (31/3) local time. Toyota said the iconic car will also be marketed in Japan in the second half of 2022.

“Bringing back the Corolla that has captivated our customers,” said Toyota President Akio Toyoda, in a Toyota Global press release, Friday (4/01).

The GR Corolla uses a 1,600cc three-cylinder turbo intercooled engine which is more powerful than the GR Yaris engine. The sports version of the Corolla engine is capable of producing a maximum output of 224 kW (304 PS)/6,500rpm, while the GR Yaris is 200 (272) 6,500rpm.

The GR Corolla adopts the GR-FOUR 4WD system which is also found on the GR Yaris. The GR-FOUR 4WD system uses an electronic multi-plate clutch to provide a variety of front and rear driving forces.

However, the 4WD in the GR Corolla’s “Drive” mode is able to control the response of the accelerator, steering, and others separately so that the driver can choose preferences according to driving style or road conditions.

The stability of the GR Corolla is also optimized with the use of pillow-ball bushings, optimized shock absorbers and springs and wheel alignment to match the GR-FOUR transmission. It can provide high performance when the car is cornering.

For the body, the GR Corolla uses the base of the Toyota Corolla Sport but by widening the front wheels as far as 60 mm and 85 mm at the rear. However, the car can still carry five passengers so it can be used as a mode of daily mobility. But Toyota has not announced the price for the American version of the GR Corolla. [antaranews]
