BALI’S NGURAH RAI AIRPORT PREPARES TO SERVE THE WORLD’S LARGEST AIRCRAFT

I GUSTI Ngurah Rai Airport will receive the landing of a large-bodied Airbus A380 aircraft owned by Emirates airline. The world’s largest commercial aircraft with a capacity of 600 passengers is planned to land at Ngurah Rai Airport in June 2023.

According to the Director General of Civil Aviation of the Ministry of Transportation, Maria Kristi Endah Murni, said our office is preparing a special operational plan, both technically and service-wise, to facilitate the take off and landing of the aircraft.

“Because the capacity of this aircraft is very large and the dimensions of the aircraft consist of two floors, it requires handling time and equipment that is different from other aircraft,” she said in a statement recently.

A number of preparations have been made from now on to welcome the landing of the Airbus A380 aircraft. The Bali Region IV Airport Authority Office (OBU) has coordinated with airport managers, namely PT Angkasa Pura I and other stakeholders.

The preparations include ground handling, garbarata, fuel handling, custom, immigration and quarantine (CIQ), readiness of the Aviation Accident Relief and Fire Fighting (PK-PPK) unit and passenger handling (pax handling). Related stakeholders also need to prepare an alternate aerodrome, which is the closest alternative airport that can accommodate A380 aircraft in the event of a disruption at Ngurah Rai Airport.

Kristi explained that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation is also preparing an assessment team that will go directly to ensure the preparation of operations and assess the SOPs made by PT Angkasa Pura I as the manager of Ngurah Rai Airport. We must ensure that all facilities are complete so that flight operations and services run safely, safely and comfortably,” she said.

Self-report counter
The Airbus A380 aircraft can accommodate around 600 passengers on its flight. Therefore, Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport manager prepared as many as 12 check-in counters or self-report to serve passengers of the world’s largest commercial aircraft.

“Usually, other airlines have 4-6 counters. But because we know the passengers can be up to 615 people, so we provide 12 counters,” said General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Bali International Airport Handy Heryudhitiawan.

In addition to providing more self-report counters compared to normal flights, it continues to prepare facilities and infrastructure and requirements that must be prepared at Bali Airport.

“The preparations that have been made are such as setting the position of the aircraft by preparing an intermediate holding point for the aircraft to stop, lighting facilities which have now been shifted by about 10.5 meters. We have also decided to position the aircraft later at A15. All of these conditions have been checked by the Ministry of Transportation and airport authorities and God willing, they are fulfilled,” Handy concluded.

The Airbus A380 aircraft that will land at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport is one of the largest passenger aircraft in the world. Having two floors, this aircraft has a length of about 73-meters and a wingspan of 78-meters.
