BESIDES having a beautiful natural landscape, Belitung also has an interesting history about coffee, which makes this small island dubbed as a coffee paradise. In fact, there are no coffee plantations at all in Belitung.
In Belitung, there is one coffee shop that is very famous, even today it is always the target of many tourists who visit there.
Kong Djie Coffee, is the oldest coffee shop (warkop) in Belitung Regency, has been established for decades, this coffee shop is still able to compete with other coffee shops that continue to mushroom. The coffee shop located at the intersection of Siburik, Jalan Gegedek, Tanjungpandan has been around since 1943.
The originator of the owner of the warkop is a citizen from Bangka Island named Ho Kong Djie. Initially this coffee shop was a family business and has been managed for generations.
The history of the opening of Kong Djie’s coffee shop was motivated by poverty due to Japanese colonization. The family then tried to survive with makeshift capital, which they then used to build a business, buy coffee and sugar and then open the first coffee shop in the Buluh Tumbang area.
Unexpectedly, the coffee concoction that was made was able to attract many visitors to keep coming. The coffee at Kong Djie coffee shop is very strong with its distinctive flavor. Made from selected coffee ingredients, such as Lampung robusta coffee combined with arabica coffee from Java.
Usually, the composition used is around 70 percent robusta and 30 percent arabica. As a result, the flavor that is brought up is quite strong on the tongue, the aroma and acidity of arabica coffee seems to remind the taste of sanger arabica coffee in Aceh.
Making coffee in this coffee shop is quite simple, the only medium needed is a large kettle, which will be the place to make coffee grounds. When the water boils, it is immediately put into the coffee with one kilogram of coffee.
On the lid of the kettle, a cloth filter is installed to prevent the powder from being carried away. This coffee brew is poured into each glass which is then brewed again with boiling water. The thickness will be adjusted to the tastes of coffee lovers. Guaranteed the taste is very spoiling the tongue of tourists visiting Belitung, especially coffee lovers in the country.
In addition, the existence of Kong Djie coffee shop has survived until now due to the friendliness of its service, tourists who come to this shop will feel a warm welcome from the manager.
Currently, the owner of Kong Djie Coffee Shop said that his coffee shop has almost 100 branches that are opened as a franchise. [sources/photo special]
