A TOTAL of 117,078 passengers were served at Sam Ratulangi International Airport (Samrat) Manado, North Sulawesi, in January 2023. When compared to January 2021, the number of passengers increased by 6% year on year (yoy). However, the number of passengers decreased by 4.41% compared to December 2022 or month to month (mtm).

Meanwhile, the Head of the North Sulawesi Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Asim Saputra, said that thousands of foreign tourists entered through Sam Ratulangi Manado International Airport. Meanwhile, foreign tourists who came in December 2022 were 1,142 people. That number decreased by 33.64% compared to November 2022 (M-to-M).

“When compared to December 2021, it increased by 10.34% (Y-on-Y). The decline in the number of foreign tourists to North Sulawesi at the end of 2022 is related to the surge in COVID-19 cases in China until December 20, 2022. Where, the Chinese authorities since December 7, 2022, have relaxed the COVID-19 anti-pandemic health protocol despite the surge in positive cases triggered by Omicron BF7,” he said.

“In addition, extreme weather in December 2022 reduced foreign tourists’ interest in marine tourism in North Sulawesi,” Asim explained.
