NEW YORK AIRPORT FACES POWER PROBLEMS, NZ AIR RETURNS TO AUCKLAND

TERMINAL A at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York City, will remain closed on Friday, February 17, 2023, due to power issues affecting flights.

“This issue is disrupting activity at one of the world’s busiest airports. Passengers should check flight status with their carriers before coming to the airport,” JFK Airport management said.

The Port Authority continues to work with terminal operators to restore flight operations as quickly as possible. JFK worked to accommodate affected flights using other terminals after the power outage began on Thursday (02/16), 2023.

Some flights scheduled to arrive at JFK were diverted to other airports on the East Coast, the airport’s website shows. The disruption forced an Air New Zealand plane to fly back to Auckland even though it had already passed mid-Pacific Ocean on Friday morning.

The flight was two-thirds of the way across the Pacific when it turned around. The airline chose to return to Auckland, rather than divert to another airport en route because restoring the schedule would be more difficult. New York Airport reported an “electrical fault in Terminal 1,” which handles international flights. [sources/photo special]
