GOVT WARNS AIRLINES NOT TO RAISE TICKET PRICES DURING HOMECOMING

THE GOVERNMENT has asked airplane operators or airlines not to raise ticket prices arbitrarily during the homecoming flow in Lebaran this year.

“There is an important thing that we want to convey to operators, please do not raise tariffs arbitrarily,” Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said after a limited meeting on homecoming flow with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Friday (03/24).

Minister of Transportation Budi Karya emphasized that the government has an upper limit on ticket prices for transportation modes that must be obeyed.

“We know that our brothers and sisters need (transportation) to go home or on vacation. Operators should cooperate not to raise excessive tariffs. We (the government) have an upper limit, if it exceeds the upper limit then we will reprimand with strict sanctions,” said the Minister of Transportation.

He said the upper limit of ticket prices is a meeting point so that operators get profits and do not interfere with people’s purchasing power.

“Therefore, we always monitor the upper limit from day to day, be it airplanes, buses, trains. It must not be violated, if it is violated we will impose sanctions. We ask operators to cooperate and media friends to help us monitor or supervise the ticket prices,” Budi Karya said.

The Minister of Transportation also conveyed the potential increase in the number of travelers nationally this year, from 85 million to 123 million people.

He said for the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) area, the number of travelers is expected to increase from 14 million to 18 million people.

“This means there is an increase of 47% for the national and 27% for Jabodetabek,” Budi Karya concluded. [antaranews/photo special]
