AUGUST 14, 1965, APPEARANCE OF THE BEATLES ON THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW

THE POLICE cleared the streets so that the group of limousines could pick up The Beatles and take them to rehearsals for the Ed Sullivan show at CBS studios 50 where they had to start work from 11:00 am.

The group did not like the balance of the sound and they kept rehearsing until the afternoon, listening to what they had recorded until they were completely satisfied with the result.

The last tape was recorded at 8:30 p.m. They performed “I Feel Fine”, Paul did “I’m Down” and Ringo introduced himself by singing “Act Naturally”. They followed with “Ticket To Ride”, then Paul sang “Yesterday” with a string quartet from the “Ed Sullivan Show” and ended with Help! where John forgot some verses.

Paul commented, “I had to sing ‘Yesterday’ in front of all these people. I was extremely nervous but it was still an exciting experience. I knew he was nervous. We had recorded “Yesterday” but we never thought we would ever have to perform it.” [sources/photo special]
