UNTIL NOW, Indonesia will still review and consider its participation to become a BRICS member. This was conveyed by Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in his statement after attending the 15th BRICS Summit which was held at the Sandton Convention Center, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, on Thursday (8/24), 2023.
“We want to study it first, calculate it first, we don’t want to be in a hurry,” said Jokowi.
Quoting the Setkab.go.id page, Jokowi said, however, Indonesia’s relations with BRICS member countries are currently considered very good, especially in the economic field. Our relations with the five BRICS members are also very good and especially in the economic field.
Apart from that, Jokowi also said that one of the processes that must be passed to become a new member of the BRICS is by submitting a letter of expression of interest. He said that until now Indonesia had not submitted the letter.
“To become a new member of the BRICS, a country must submit a letter of expression of interest, all must submit the letter, and until now Indonesia has not submitted the letter,” he said.
Additional information only, BRICS consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa was formed in 2009 at the initiative of Russia. The establishment of the BRICS group aims to develop comprehensive cooperation among the countries concerned.
Jokowi’s presence opens up the possibility of Indonesia joining the BRICS membership. Of course, if BRICS membership is realized, then it can add to the intimacy of Indonesia’s trade relations with the five countries. [sources/photo special]
