ANGELA: PROJECT FOUR TOURISM AND CREATIVE ECONOMY TRENDS IN 2024

THE INDONESIAN Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy projects four tourism and creative economy trends in 2024, namely Bleisure, Wellness Experience, Deep and Meaningful and Set-Jetting.

According to the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Angela Tanoesoedibjo, in the End of Year Press Conference at Balairung Soesilo Soedarman, Sapta Pesona Building, Jakarta, Friday (12/22) 2023, said that global business travel was recovering and growing the freedom to work remotely increases the flexibility to travel between work routines, business travelers continue to incorporate leisure activities into their work commitments, thus making bleisure (business and leisure) a trend that will continue to grow post-pandemic.

“This will increasingly increase, how people will combine business and leisure into one, this is actually beneficial for us, because Jakarta is a center for business, and we can bring this from Jakarta for tourists who previously did business to be able to travel to Bali, to Labuan Bajo, to Borobudur,” said Angela.

She explained that opportunities can also be taken by combining combined packages between business and tourism. So how do we create combined packages between business and leisure, especially with the increasing number of Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Exhibitions (MICE), this encourages business growth, we can combine this with tour packages.

Furthermore, the trend for wellness tourism experiences is projected to become increasingly popular, this is related to the shift in tourist behavior after the COVID-19 pandemic, who are increasingly aware of the importance of mental health and spiritual experiences.

“Wellness experience is important, so we are developing health tourism, we are currently working on this, what we know is that in Bali there is a Sanur Health Special Economic Zone (KEK) which is being built, we hope this will become one of the points of interest for our health tourism,” Angela remarked.

There is also a trend for deep and meaningful tourism. Uncertainty during the pandemic means more than 3/4 of travelers in a Booking.com survey want higher quality and more meaningful travel experiences.

Angela explained that Indonesia has a strong nature and culture, which can be packaged with interesting story telling. So that tourists can enjoy a quality and meaningful tourism experience.

Another trend is jetting set tourism (film shooting locations) which will be loved and visited for tourism. Meanwhile, in the creative economy sector, there will also be four trends in 2024, namely Audio Visual, Mobile Games, Music and Collaboration.

“The trend in the creative economy is audio-visual. We know how close the young generation is to creating content. This will get stronger because of the many platforms that can be accessed by the younger generation,” Deputy Minister, Angela noted.

Angela also assesses that in 2024 there will be a transformation of mobile games from entertainment to a profession. Currently, the government is drafting a Presidential Regulation which is targeted to be completed by the end of 2023. This Presidential Regulation is proof of the government’s support for the development of the gaming industry in the country.

“We see that there is around 25 trillion in the game market in Indonesia, but more than 99% are foreign games. We are here to continue to make sure that Indonesian games that can be played by our local game players also become more global. This ecosystem is being built, so it’s not just the players but the infrastructure so that this game can become esports tourism,” she affirmed.

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy continues to encourage the development of the country’s gaming industry by collaborating with game developers to strengthen the Indonesian gaming industry ecosystem.

“Recently I met with game developers, we want to collaborate to strengthen the game ecosystem and also its infrastructure. So, this game can become esports tourism. So, there will be many tourists who play this game who come to Indonesia to be able to enjoy Indonesia, and they definitely have a lot of followers with high engagement, so we can use this to promote Indonesia,” she elaborated.

Likewise, music trends will continue to develop in 2024, because of the new platform for musicians to be creative. Therefore, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy will continue to encourage musicians to protect their IP.

And finally, is collaboration towards progress. Collaboration continues to be carried out between subsectors to produce added value for creative economy products, for example the film and culinary subsectors, or fashion and film.

Furthermore, she elaborated that the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy had developed a strategy for developing the tourism and creative economy sectors with productive, inclusive and sustainable principles. These three principles will be revealed in various plans for the 2024 Work Program.

Continuing to explain the program in terms of the focus of the next indicator, namely the creation of added value, Angela Tanoesoedibjo revealed that the first was to release tourism and creative economy outlooks and conduct a lot of training which parekraf actors participated in. Tourism and creative economy players gain knowledge about what parekraf will be like in the future.

She explained that the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy also supports the preparation of Investment Project Ready to Offer (IPRO) material in 5 Super Priority Tourism Destinations (DPSP) and 10 Tourism Priority Destinations (DPP), preparation of academic texts for the formation of BLU, strengthening relationships between institutions, and support for tourism and creative business development.  And of course, our signature program is the Indonesian Tourism Village Award where there will be more than 4,500 participants in 2023 and 75 winners have been determined.

“Apart from that, 5 creative districts/cities have also been designated in the 2023 Creative Words program, six districts/cities have carried out PM3I sampling tests and 1 city has been designated as the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) in 2023, namely the city of Surakarta,” said Angela.

Furthermore, to create added value, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is running the National Movement Proud to be Made in Indonesia, National Movement Proud to Travel in Indonesia, Indonesia Spice Up The World, and organizing event support or MICE.

“This is very, very important, events are one of the main strategies of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to increase the number of tourists,” she added.

Furthermore, to focus on digital transformation indicators, there are various programs carried out by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, starting from the HR Digital Entrepreneurship Championship, facilitating financial technology financing for various creative tourism businesses, as well as developing and updating data on various creative tourism dashboards.

“The main point here is how we want to encourage the birth of more new entrepreneurs supported by technological developments. And to focus on indicators of increasing productivity, various programs are carried out including the preparation of the Tourism Law Draft (RUU) which is currently in process, the preparation of the Integrated Tourism Master Plan (ITMP), the preparation of tourism journals and technical guidance, Also, advocacy and investment assistance, increasing capacity for organizing regional events and others,” concluded Angela.
