INDONESIA PURSUES SUSTAINABILITY IN TOURISM DEVELOPMENT: SANDIAGA

TOURISM and Creative Economy Minister, Sandiaga Uno stated that the government has been prioritizing environmental preservation and sustainability in its efforts to develop the tourism and creative economy sectors in the country.

“Indonesia has been pursuing sustainable tourism development by implementing various initiatives, including preservation of local traditions and culture” he noted in a statement received from his office on Friday (02/23), 2024.

Sandiaga made the statement while delivering a speech at the Raisina Dialogue 2024 held in New Delhi, India, on Thursday (February 22). In his speech, he said that the government’s efforts to develop Indonesia’s tourism and creative sectors have been in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Indonesia’s efforts to pursue sustainable tourism and a creative economy align with the SDGs in several ways, including the promotion of sustainability and economic development,” he said.

He emphasized that Indonesia’s sustainable tourism and creative economy also aimed at strengthening partnership and collaboration, preserving local traditions and cultures, strengthening social and environmental awareness, and developing sustainable innovation.

By placing the SDGs as a reference, he affirmed that the Indonesian government seeks to encourage innovation in the tourism industry in the hopes of paving the way for the sustainable development of technology and business models.

Minister Sandiaga stated that sustainable tourism and a creative economy are expected to create a competitive ecosystem for the industry, boost the economy, attract eco-minded tourists, and contribute to global efforts to create an eco-friendly future.

He stated that Indonesia has been striving to decarbonize its tourism sector by taking various measures, including promoting the use of eco-friendly vehicles in tourism destinations, endorsing the use of green energy, and encouraging carbon offset activities. [traveltext.id]
