THE INDONESIA’S Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, was a guest lecturer at the “Seminar with Westminster International University of Tashkent” in Uzbekistan. On this occasion, Sandiaga emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism, which he called the future of the tourism sector.
“Sustainable tourism carries the concept of travel that can have a long-term impact, both socially and culturally, as well as economically and environmentally. We are discussing the future of the tourism industry, which mainly revolves around sustainable development and explores how we can increase its growth, “said Sandiaga at Westminster International University of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Wednesday (10/2), 2024.
He explained that at the Ministry of Tourism we present various programs or policies that promote the realization of quality and sustainable tourism. Among them are the reduction of carbon emissions, preservation of natural resources, culture and local traditions.
“I also expressed that Indonesia supports the signing of the Glasgow Declaration in 2022. This is a proof of the Indonesian government’s commitment to align tourism policies with climate change goals,” he said.
He added that this underscores the urgency of accelerating climate action in tourism to support the global goal of halving emissions by 2030 and achieving zero emissions by 2050. Our Ministry of Tourism also has a Carbon Footprint Calculator (CFPC) program, which is an effort to offset the value of emissions produced by absorbing carbon footprints to prevent their negative impact on the climate.
“Tourism and creative economy activities must be intended that these environmental issues are our main issues, so that this can increase the reputation value and public trust in the tourism sector and strengthen the climate-friendly tourism movement,” Sandiaga stated.
He explained that at the Ministry of Tourism, we have also implemented the Anugerah Desa Wisata Indonesia (ADWI) program over the past four years. The ecosystem that has been formed is also considered to be getting better and has focused on sustainability values.
In addition, he is also preparing the Indonesia Quality Tourism Fund to strengthen Indonesia’s tourism sector by providing funding for environmentally sustainable projects that have high potential to attract tourists and promote economic growth in the tourism destination environment.
“The fund will be prepared to be distributed in 2025 with a total of US$131 million or about Rp2 trillion in the first year. This fund is aimed at the implementation of large-scale events that are environmentally sustainable, as well as economically and socially beneficial to local communities in tourism destinations,” Sandiaga affirmed.
He elaborated that in implementing this sustainable tourism program, the basic foundation carried out by the Indonesian government is to develop regulations to build a framework that supports sustainable tourism development.
