ORCHESTRAL PERFORMANCE, THE PRESERVATION OF INDONESIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC

DEPUTY Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar attended an orchestral concert titled “Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 4 Beethoven Symphony No. 8” at Simfonia Hall, Jakarta, on Saturday, February 15, 2025. This event is a place for classical music lovers to enjoy the performance in the only orchestra building in Jakarta with a capacity of 1,200 spectators.

On this occasion, Deputy Minister of Creative Economy Irene highlighted the lack of classical music performance venues in Indonesia. According to her, the Ministry of Creative Economy  looks at this from two angles: preserving existing venues and encouraging investors to build similar spaces.

“For us at the Ministry of Creative Economy, there are two important things. First, we need to keep the existing venues alive so that they are always full. Second, we hope that there will be entrepreneurs who will invest in similar businesses to support the growth of the classical music ecosystem in Indonesia,” Irene said.

She also stressed the importance of encouraging people to invest in the creative economy, including building performance spaces like Aula Simfonia. According to her, this can be a promising business model while strengthening the music subsector as a new driver of national economic growth.

“We see great potential in the music subsector to become the new growth engine of the Indonesian economy,” Irene added.

In addition, Irene highlighted the lack of information about creative economy events, including classical music performances. Many people do not know about such events.

“I want to ensure that information about such events is easily accessible. Therefore, I am proposing that ticket ordering information can be integrated into a digital platform managed by the Ministry of Creative Economy. This will make it easier for the public to find and support creative economy events,” she explained.

Meanwhile, the executive director of Aula Simfonia Jakarta, Eunice Tong, said the establishment of the hall was based on her father’s love for classical music and the desire to introduce classical music to the Indonesian people. Since its establishment 15 years ago, Aula Simfonia has been the only building in Jakarta with the best acoustics for orchestral performances.

“Aula Simfonia Jakarta was founded because of my father’s love for Indonesia and classical music. For 15 years, we have been committed to providing a space for classical music lovers to enjoy high quality performances with the best acoustics,” Eunice affirmed.

In the future, Eunice hopes to see more orchestras in Indonesia and more young people interested in studying classical music.

With government support and the presence of quality performance spaces like Aula Simfonia, it is hoped that she can inspire creative industry players to invest in the arts and culture sector. It is also hoped that it will encourage the younger generation to learn and love classical music more. [traveltext.id]
