GEN Z NOW ONE OF THE MAJOR DRIVERS OF INDONESIAN TOURISM

CO-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of tiket.com, Gaery Undarsa, said that Gen Z is a major driver of tourism. Although the millennial generation is still the largest, Gen Z has also shown its influence on current tourism trends.

“Gen Z has entered a certain time where they are now one of the major drivers of tourism,” Gaery said at a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday (02/18) 2025.

Gaery said that Gen Z no longer sees travel or tourism as an additional or secondary need, but often as a primary need. This is different from the previous generation, which tended to prioritize material needs before focusing on travel.

In addition, Gaery says that for Gen Z, travel doesn’t always have to be far away, but rather the quality of the experience they have.

“So, the funny thing about Gen Z is that tourism or travel has become their primary need. So, whatever form it takes, travel may not have to be too far. But what’s important is that they have a kind of healing, a gateway, a staycation,” he said.

Based on the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), it was recorded that domestic tourist trips or Indonesians who traveled domestically throughout 2024 reached 1.02 billion.

Gaery added that based on data from tiket.com, public enthusiasm for tourism was very high, especially in December 2024.

“And interestingly, until January and even until now, the enthusiasm is still quite high. Why? Because there are many holidays in the first semester of this year,” he said.

In terms of the online ticket tiket.com’s week ticket in 2024, there was a fairly significant increase. “Like international flights, the trend has increased by 20%, international hotels have increased by 59%, domestic accommodation by 48% and tourist attractions by 17%,” he explained.

“This demand is driven in my opinion, we see that the biggest trend is actually Gen Z,” he concluded. [antaranews]
