SUSTAINABILITY IS KEY TO FUTURE OF FASHION IN INDONESIA: WIDIYANTI

INDONESIAN Tourism Minister, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana stated that sustainability is key to the future of fashion in Indonesia.

In her remarks at the opening of Jakarta Fashion Week 2026 in Jakarta on Monday, Widiyanti stated that all elements of the Indonesian fashion ecosystem, from local textile artisans to global fashion designers, need to be continuously nurtured.

“By prioritizing environmentally friendly practices and respecting local artisans, we are not only producing clothing, but also building a classy civilization,” said Minister Widiyanti.

This, the Minister continued, aligns with the Ministry of Tourism’s flagship programs, “Tourism Upgrading” and “Event by Indonesia,” which aim to strengthen Indonesia’s position as a high-quality tourism destination and present a variety of national activities with global appeal.

Widiyanti said that fashion events like Jakarta Fashion Week are an important milestone in solidifying Indonesia’s position in the global fashion industry.

According to Widiyanti, Jakarta Fashion Week marks a major celebration of the nation’s creativity and culture. The JFW 2026 theme, “The Legacy of Style,” is seen as a reflection of the long journey of Indonesia’s fashion heritage, which continues to live and evolve.

“On this stage, a collaboration between tradition and innovation, between the richness of textile heritage and modern lifestyles, is born. We are witnessing major changes, such as the younger generation increasingly embracing local products as they seek authenticity, value, and sustainability. This spirit is what makes our fashion industry more empowered and visible on the international stage,” said Widiyanti.

Minister of Tourism Widiyanti stated that events like Jakarta Fashion Week create sustainable effects, such as motivating MSMEs, expanding creative job opportunities, and fostering pride in local products and the nation’s culture.

In this regard, the Minister of Tourism believes that Jakarta, as the capital of ASEAN, where this prestigious fashion week is consistently held, has great potential to become the Fashion Capital of ASEAN.

“Fashion is a universal language, a form of cross-national dialogue, a medium for cultural diplomacy and a strategy for promoting culture-based tourism. Let’s bring the spirit of Indonesian fashion to illuminate the world with our cultural richness and creativity,” concluded Widiyanti. [traveltext.id]
