THE MINISTRY of Tourism stated that Indonesia’s tourism sector will continue to grow positively until May 2026 despite global geopolitical dynamics.
In the Ministry of Tourism’s Monthly Performance Report in Jakarta on Friday (July 10, 2026), Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana stated that this positive growth was reflected in an increase in international tourist visits and domestic tourist travel, a surplus in tourist visits, and a stable recovery in hotel occupancy rates.
“The May 2026 figure represents the highest number of visits so far this year, demonstrating that foreign tourist interest in Indonesia remains strong,” said Widiyanti.
She added that domestic tourist travel remains the mainstay of domestic tourism amidst the increase in foreign tourist visits. At the same time, hotel occupancy rates are showing a stable recovery.
In May 2026, foreign tourist visits reached 1.38 million, a 5.83% increase compared to 1.31 million in May 2025. Cumulatively, from January to May 2026, Indonesia recorded 6.07 million foreign tourist visits. This figure represents a 7.68% increase compared to the same period the previous year.
“The growth in foreign tourist visits was primarily supported by the Southeast Asian market, which increased significantly by 11.06%, from 547,521 visits in May 2025 to 608,076 visits in May 2026. Growth was also recorded in the Middle East (5.67%), the rest of Asia (5.37%), Oceania (4.69%), Africa (3.72%), and the Americas (1.13%),” he said.
Meanwhile, the European market contracted by 5.91 percent amid global geopolitical disruption and uncertainty. In terms of domestic tourists, 106.16 million trips were recorded in May 2026, an 8.69% increase compared to 97.67 million trips in May 2025.
“The increase was primarily driven by the momentum of national holidays and collective leave, which people used to travel domestically. Cumulatively, domestic tourist trips from January to May 2026 reached 523.22 million, a 2.86% increase compared to 508.67 million trips in January to May 2025,” he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa added that 550,382 Indonesians traveled abroad in May 2026. This number decreased by 6.05% compared to 585,800 trips in May 2025.
“Cumulatively, public travel from January to May 2026 reached 3.69 million trips, a 3.88% decrease compared to 3.84 million trips in the same period the previous year. The decline in international travel coincided with an increase in domestic tourist travel. This indicates that the appeal of domestic destinations remains strong and is increasingly becoming a choice for Indonesians,” he said.
Compared to domestic travel, Indonesia still recorded a surplus of tourist visits. In May 2026, the number of foreign tourist visits exceeded domestic travel, with a surplus of 0.83 million visits. Cumulatively, from January to May 2026, the surplus reached 2.37 million visits. [traveltext.id]
