INTRA-REGIONAL TRAVEL REMAINS STRONG OPTIONS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

DIGITAL travel platform Agoda has revealed that travelers across Southeast Asia are increasingly looking to neighboring countries as more accessible travel options for the first half of 2026, with Vietnam emerging as the region’s most compelling destination.

Vietnam recorded growth in accommodation search interest from all other Southeast Asian markets: Indonesia (20%), Cambodia (22%), Laos (22%), Thailand (24%), Malaysia (40%), Singapore (52%), and the Philippines (98%). Agoda’s flight booking data reflects a similar shift, with Vietnam entering the top five overseas destinations for Filipino travelers for the first time—and immediately securing third place.

The data highlights Vietnam’s growing appeal as an accessible regional destination, driven by expanded visa-free access, longer permitted stays, and improved flight connectivity.

According to Andrew Smith, Agoda’s Senior Vice President of Supply, said that while the first half of 2026 presents its own challenges, the desire among travelers to explore remains undiminished.

“Instead, they are tending to shift toward closer, more accessible destinations. Vietnam’s growth in the region demonstrates that travelers respond decisively when barriers are lowered and travel becomes easier,” he said.

He explained that interest in Malaysia is also rising, particularly from Cambodia. Accommodation searches from Cambodia increased by 24%, while flight data shows Malaysia moving from third to second place on the list of overseas destinations for Cambodian travelers. This momentum is building as Tourism Malaysia continues its promotional efforts in Cambodia this year as part of the broader “Visit Malaysia 2026” campaign.

“Search interest in Indonesia has also risen in several neighboring markets. Indonesia climbed to second place in Malaysia and third place in Singapore, recording increases of 18% and 17%, respectively,” Smith affirmed.

He also added that, combined with high demand for affordable accommodation—particularly among travelers seeking rates below US$50 per night—these findings indicate that the desire to discover new destinations, alongside pricing, serves as a key driver of regional travel interest.

Southeast Asia’s Advantage: Proximity
Agoda’s traveler survey reveals that nearly one-third of respondents plan to take short trips lasting one to three days in 2026. The geographical proximity of Southeast Asian nations makes the region an ideal destination for short getaways.

Agoda’s data from the first half of 2026 further reinforces this trend, as does its partnership with the ASEAN Secretariat on the “SEABlings: Closer Than You Think” campaign. Launched in August 2026 in collaboration with AirAsia MOVE, the campaign aims to inspire Southeast Asians to explore their own region.

Smith noted that when planning three-day trips instead of two-week vacations, travelers can travel more frequently, explore a wider range of destinations, and enjoy greater budget flexibility.

“Southeast Asia is well-positioned to capitalize on this shifting trend because its destinations are close to one another and benefit from strong connectivity, enabling more frequent and seamless travel,” he concluded. [sources/special photo]
