THE INDONESIAN Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy facilitated selected designer, Dea Widya to participate in the London Design Biennale (LDB), which was held from 1 to 27 June 2012, in London, England.
The London Design Biennale is an international exhibition that brings together designers, curators and design institutions. There are more than 50 countries in the world and regions participating in LDB activities. This year, Es Devlin, an experienced designer and artist in large multi-sub-sector projects between design, art, opera, music, and technology, was appointed as artistic director carrying the big theme of LDB 2021 entitled “Resonance”.
This year’s event was attended by 28 representatives of cities, countries, and regions, and Indonesia is the only country representative from the Southeast Asian region. This year’s LDB activity was supposed to be held in 2020 and Indonesia’s participation commitment has been stated since 2019, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic that broke out in early 2020, this event has been postponed until June this year.
According to Deputy for Marketing of Tourism Ministry, Nia Niscaya, explaining that the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is in synergy with the Indonesian Embassy in London to realize the best facilitation for creative economy actors who are representatives of Indonesia.
“Indonesia’s participation, represented by the Tourism Ministry, in this event is a tangible manifestation of the government’s seriousness in improving the image and identity of the Indonesian nation in the eyes of the world as a nation that really cares about the field of design and fosters public awareness and appreciation of the creative economy,” said Nia Niscaya.
Furthermore, Nia explained that the Ministry of Tourism will continue to build work and collaborate in order to maintain the existence of the Indonesian design sub-sector in world-class events.
“We will actively promote and improve the image of Indonesia’s creative economy sector in the international arena through participation in world strategic events. Collaboration is one of the keys to improving the creative economy,” she explained.
Nia hopes that with Indonesian designers joining international design exhibitions, they can bring the name of Indonesia’s creative economy to life in the eyes of the world.
“We also hope that the participation of Indonesian designers in this LDB can lead to an extraordinary increase in the competitiveness of the creative economy in the future,” Nia noted.
The selected designers who represented Indonesia at this year’s LDB event were the result of a long process of curation involving designers, artists, and senior Indonesian academics as a jury in 2019. There were 9 work proposals submitted, and Dea Widya’s proposal, with the theme The Invisible: Free the Space! which was finally chosen by the jury to represent the Indonesian Pavilion.
