CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS, PAYMENT SOLUTIONS IN THE PANDEMIC ERA

THE COVID-19 pandemic that has hit the whole world has changed people’s daily habits and lifestyles, including the choice of safer payment methods.

During the pandemic, people are encouraged to reduce mobility and maintain physical distance and contact. Departing from this phenomenon, contactless payments have become a payment method solution for direct transactions at physical stores.

This is also supported by the Mastercard Global Consumer Survey which shows 80% of respondents in Asia-Pacific see contactless payments as a cleaner transaction method. In addition, 75% of respondents in the region also said they will continue to use the method after the pandemic is over.

Indonesian people are familiar with contactless payment technologies such as e-money. Along with the growing needs and expectations of consumers for the choice of contactless payment methods in today’s new normal, Mastercard strives to provide other contactless payment options that are safe, convenient and easy for everyone.

Quoted from the official Mastercard broadcast, the advantages of the contactless payment method include a more secure payment solution.

This contactless payment method allows consumers to make transactions without physical contact when they make payments at physical stores. When consumers use a contactless payment card, they only need to hold the card close to the Electronic Data Capture (EDC) machine until a successful payment notification appears.

“In addition, Mastercard’s contactless payment technology is supported by various advanced security features to protect consumers from fraud, personal data leakage, as well as additional protection when the card is lost or stolen,” Mastercard said in an official release.

Some of the key security features of Mastercard for contactless cards include EMV chip technology to store all data and encrypt every transaction, to ensure the safety of consumers. Mastercard also protects consumers from fraud by mandating identification of entry modes at Point of Sales (POS) as contactless transactions. In addition, in accordance with the provisions of Bank Indonesia, consumers who make transactions above IDR1 million will be asked to enter a PIN.

In addition, Indonesian consumers can enjoy contactless transaction services on the Mastercard network globally. Currently, Mastercard has more than 20 million merchant partners in more than 140 countries who have accepted the contactless payment method. [antaranews/photo special]
