25 COUNTRIES THAT WILL APPLY TOURIST TAX IN 2022, INCLUDING INDONESIA

BY THE END of 2022, non-EU citizens, including Americans, Australians, British and other tourists from outside the Schengen zone, will need to fill out a €7 application for entry. Those under 18 years old or over 70 years old do not have to pay the fee. The following 25 countries will apply the foreign tourist tax, and Indonesia will also apply it.

1.Thailand
Thailand is reportedly introducing a 300 Baht tourist fee from April onwards. The governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand said that part of the cost will be used to treat tourists as there are times when health insurance does not cover them. It will also help finance the further development of tourist attractions, such as the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

2. Venice
Venice could soon start charging visiting tourists from the summer of 2022 onwards. Italian newspaper La Stampa reported in August that several measures had been proposed to control tourist numbers, such as an online booking system. The proposed levy will vary between €3 and €10, based on whether it is low season or high season.

The minimum daily fee for most foreigners is US$250 per day during high season and slightly cheaper in low season. But it covers a lot of things, including accommodation, domestic transportation, guides, food, and entry fees.

7. Bulgaria
Bulgaria applies a tourist fee for overnight stays. This is very low and varies depending on the area classification and the hotel you are staying at.

8. Caribbean Islands
Most Caribbean islands have a tourist tax added to the hotel fee or departure fee. Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Bonaire, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the US Virgin Islands all have some form of fee for visitors.

9. Croatia
Croatia increased their tourist tax in 2019. The increase in rates only applies during the peak season in summer. Visitors pay around 10 kuna per night.

10. Czech Republic
You only need to pay for tours in the Czech Republic when visiting the capital, Prague. It is very small at under 24 CZK and is paid per night, up to 60 a night. The tax does not apply to children under 18 years of age.

11. France
There is a “taxe de séjour” to be paid in France. This is added to your hotel bill and varies depending on which city you are in. The rates range from 0.21? Up to about 4.15? per night. Tourist attractions such as Paris and Lyon use the money to maintain tourism infrastructure.

12. Germany
Germany has what they call a “cultural tax” (kulturförderabgabe), as well as a “bed tax” (bettensteuer), in cities like Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Berlin. It costs about 5 percent of your hotel bill.

13. Greece
The tourist tax in Greece is based on the number of hotel stars or the number of rooms you rent. It can be anything up to €4 per room. It was introduced by the Greek Ministry of Tourism to help cut the country’s debt.

14. Hungary
Tour fees in Hungary only apply in Budapest. Travelers must pay an extra 4 percent per night based on the price of their room.

15. Indonesia
Tourist tax in Indonesia only applies in Bali. In 2019, a new law states that overseas visitors to the Indonesian island must pay a fee of IDR146,278. Revenue from taxes is reportedly used for programs that help preserve the Balinese environment and culture.

16. Italy
The tourist tax in Italy depends on where you are. Venice may impose its own taxes in the summer of 2022. Meanwhile, costs in Rome range from €3 to €7 per night depending on room type, but some smaller cities charge more.

17. Japan
In Japan, the tax is in the form of a departure tax. Visitors to Japan pay 1,000 yen when they leave the country. The official tourism website claims this small tax makes a “significant difference” to the economy.

18. Malaysia
The Malaysian tourist tax is a flat rate and applies per night you stay. No more than about 19 ringgit per night.

19. New Zealand
Many tourists, people on holiday, and some students and workers coming to New Zealand must pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) upon arrival of NZ$35. But people from Australia are excluded.

20. The Netherlands
The Netherlands has a land tourism tax and a water tourism tax. In Amsterdam, this accounts for 7% of the cost of a hotel room. This is called toeristenbelasting.

21. Portugal
Portugal’s low tourist tax is payable per night per person and only applies to guests aged 13 years and over. It’s around €2. You only have to pay for the first seven days of your stay.

22. Slovenia
Tourist taxes in Slovenia vary by location and hotel rating. It is slightly higher in the larger cities and resort towns, including Ljubljana and Bled at around €3.

23. Spain
If you are heading to Ibiza or Majorca, you have to pay a tourist tax. The Continuous Tourist Tax, which applies to holiday accommodation in the Spanish Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera), also applies to every traveler aged 16 and over. During high season, taxes can be up to €4 per night.

24. Switzerland
Tourist taxes in Switzerland vary by location. Cost per night and per person is around 2.28CHF. Quotations for accommodation usually do not include tourist taxes, these are specified as a separate amount, making them easier to track. And it only applies to stays under 40 days.

25. United States of America
