THE GOVERNMENT of Indonesia, through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, is collaborating with the Government of the Republic of the Fiji Islands to develop a quality and sustainable tourism sector so that it has a broad impact on improving the economy and opening up job opportunities.
The signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was carried out by the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, Sandiaga Uno with the Minister of Trade, Trade, Tourism and Transportation of the Republic of the Fiji Islands Faiyaz Siddiq Koya on the sidelines of the second meeting of the Tourism Working Group (TWG) which took place at Nusa Dua, Bali, Friday (9/23).
On that occasion, the two ministers gathered to discuss their crucial roles and responsibilities to collaborate and rebuild the tourism sector into a more resilient, sustainable, inclusive and safe sector.
“This is a big step where we can finally sign the MoU between the two countries which has been discussed since 2014,” said Sandiaga Uno.
The signing of this MoU will encourage mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries such as tourism promotion, tourism product development, private sector cooperation, human resource development, as well as research and development in the context of tourism recovery during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and to achieve prosperity. both countries.
Through this MoU, the two countries can collaborate further to create programs and activities to strengthen bilateral relations and promote the exchange of people/experts in an effort to open up opportunities for tourism actors in the two countries to work together in the interests of both countries so that they are more resilient.
“The most important thing is how tourism can create jobs because in Fiji alone the contribution of the tourism sector to the economy reaches 40% while in Indonesia it is around 4.3%. We believe that this joint work will be able to strengthen the economies of both countries and I would also like to convey that there are several issues such as climate change that we both face as an archipelagic country,” Sandiaga stated.
He added that we are looking forward to implementing this MoU in the future.
Meanwhile the Minister of Trade, Trade, Tourism and Transportation of the Republic of the Fiji Islands, Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, said that as an archipelagic country, the challenges of tourism development faced by Indonesia and the Republic of the Fiji Islands are relatively the same.
