THE WATER in the Venice canals suddenly changed color on Sunday (5/28), 2023 local time. The public was also confused by the changing color of the water in Venice, which was previously blue to green. As reported by AFP, the sight of the changing color of the water in Venice’s canals went viral on social media after being uploaded by local residents.
Not only that, according to the Twitter accounts of the Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige fire departments, they also show views of changing colors in Venice’s canals.
The governor of Venice, Luza Zaia, also confirmed the viral video. In his Twitter account, he said that the change in the color of the water to green was seen not far from the Rialto Bridge.
“This morning a patch of glowing green liquid appeared in Venice’s Grand Canal, reported by several residents near the Rialto Bridge,” he tweeted as reported by news.com.au. The green color was first noticed at 09.30 local time. After a while, the green lump then expanded into the canal area.
The changing color of Venice’s canals to green was also witnessed by gondoliers carrying tourists. The sight suddenly became the attention of the tourists who were on the gondola. Not a few of them recorded and photographed the incident.
The cause of the changing color of Venice’s canals is still under investigation. Meanwhile, the Italian fire service said it was assisting the regional Environmental Protection Agency to take samples for testing.
“Grand Canal in green is what the fire department found this morning when we intervened together with ARPAV to collect samples and analyze this abnormal color,” he said as quoted by Al Jazeera.
The Veneto regional environmental protection agency, ARPAV, said it had received samples of the water and was identifying the substance in it.

The incident of changing the water in the canals of Venice is reminiscent of events that have previously been carried out by Italian environmental activists. As a form of protest, they previously colored a monument in Italy.
Not only that, a week earlier an activist was found to have climbed the Trevi Fountain in Rome and poured a black liquid known as vegetable charcoal into the waterfall.
A group of 10 activists also stood around the fountain holding a banner that read “We Won’t Pay for Fossil Fuels”. It refers to the campaign to stop public investment and fossil fuel subsidies. However, the authorities have yet to decide whether the changing color of the water in Venice’s canals was caused by the protests by activists.
