MOSCOW CENTRAL DIAMETER PIONEERING LEAP IN GLOBAL TRANSPORT SYSTEM

AS CITIES around the world seek innovative and sustainable transport networks, MCD offers a vision of the future, demonstrating how urban mobility can be reimagined. The Moscow pioneering initiative aims to build a surface metro system that seamlessly integrates Moscow’s sprawling agglomerations, setting a gold standard for urban transport solutions.

Moscow is proud to launch its third Moscow Central Diameter (MCD-3), which marks a tremendous advance in the urban mobility arena not only for Russia but also on a global scale. This development underscores the city’s commitment to providing efficient, sustainable and modern transportation for its commuters.

Inaugurated by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mayor of Moscow Sergei Sobyanin, MCD stands as a monumental project in global passenger transportation. Its establishment aims to build a surface metro system to seamlessly connect the vast Moscow agglomeration.

As a testament to its success, in just two years since its founding, MCD witnessed the launch of its first two-section diameter on 21 November 2019. Since that milestone, MCD has served over 600 million passengers, echoing its undeniable significance and efficiency.

The newly launched MCD-3 is a colossal 85 km stretch of railway line that bridges the northwestern and southeastern districts of Moscow. This line already has 38 operational stations, with the addition of 3 more stations – Mitkovo, Malino and Rizhskaya – which will be realized soon. Serving an impressive 3.5 million residents, MCD-3 connects 24 districts of Moscow and 4 additional districts in the region around Moscow.

One of the standout features of the MCD-3 is its integration with 21 transit connections, including the famous Big Circle Line and Moscow Central Circle (MCC). This synergy is expected to reduce congestion on the three existing metro lines by up to 15%.

Furthermore, the successful operation of MCD-3 promised a significant reduction in road traffic, predicting a daily reduction of nearly 7,000 vehicles. This initiative is in line with Moscow’s vision for a greener environment, which aims to reduce harmful emissions by up to 36,000 tons per year.

In addition, traditional suburban routes will soon undergo a modern transformation, with plans to replace older trains by 2024. This initiative will ensure all long-distance suburban zones have 100% modernized rail facilities. Today, MCD is proud to be fully operational with new trains.

Moscow’s ambitions do not stop there. The city envisions a series of future projects, with highlights including the introduction of the MCD-5 diameter section, improved connectivity between Moscow and surrounding major cities. [sources/photo special]
