AIS FORUM LEADERS SIGN DECLARATION TO CREATE NEW GLOBAL ORGANIZATION

THE ARCHIPELAGIC and Island States (AIS) Forum has issued a joint declaration by leaders from 32 archipelagic and island states, regarding the establishment of an international organization to strengthen development cooperation among member countries. This declaration was agreed during a high-level meeting in Bali on Wednesday, (10/11), 2023.

These nations have concurred on the creation of a charter-based organization, which would uphold principles such as equality, solidarity, peaceful dispute resolution, and the utmost respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“Task ministers of the Archipelagic and Island States Forum, representing participating countries, to initiate discussions on the strategic roadmap and modalities for establishing a charter-based organization to promote cooperation,” the document said.

Since its establishment in 2018, the AIS Forum has provided an inclusive space for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the generation of smart and innovative solutions by archipelagic and island states, it added.

The cooperation focuses on four key areas. First, addressing climate change through mitigation, adaptation, and disaster management, including strategies to mitigate risks from extreme weather events and the enhancement of forecasting and early warning capacities.

Second, creating sustainable economic development and decent blue job opportunities through the implementation of blue economy, responsible and sustainable fisheries, and aquaculture.

These efforts are integral to achieving food security, developing inter-island connectivity, and advancing capacity in marine research and innovation, including biotechnology.

Third, safeguarding the marine environment against challenges such as ocean health degradation, loss of biodiversity, acidification, plastic waste, and marine pollution. Lastly, promoting effective maritime governance.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo earlier said that the AIS Forum is dedicated to delivering tangible benefits to society. Indonesia has also committed to allocating grants for addressing climate change and developing innovations in ocean governance. [antaranews]
