THE RED ornaments typical of Chinese New Year colored the Glodok Pancoran Chinatown area in West Jakarta on Saturday (01/31), 2026, and seasonal stalls were crowded with residents hunting for decorations to welcome the Chinese New Year.
A variety of ornaments were sold in the area, such as lucky cat dolls, decorative flowers, lanterns, and hanging accessories at varying prices.
Nia (28), a Chinese New Year ornament and trinket vendor, sold various ornaments, including cat dolls and decorative hangers of various sizes.
“The cheapest hangers are IDR5,000, with the regular ones selling for IDR80,000. The cat dolls range from IDR50,000 to IDR100,000,” she said.
According to Nia, size is a determining factor in the price of the items she sells. It also depends on the size. Small cat dolls are priced at IDR50,000, and larger ones at IDR100,000.
“These are different again. The gold ones are small, IDR30,000, and large ones at IDR300,000,” she said, pointing to her wares.
Besides decorations and hanging items, lanterns are also a relatively high-priced item. Typical red Chinese New Year lanterns are priced from IDR80,000 to IDR500,000, depending on the size.
“Regular lanterns cost IDR80,000 to IDR400,000. Large hanging lanterns can range from IDR400,000 to IDR500,000,” Nia said.
Meanwhile, red angpao and headband accessories are priced relatively affordably, ranging from IDR5,000 to IDR35,000.
“Angpau now range from IDR5,000 to IDR35,000. Headbands start at IDR25,000, and this one is IDR30,000,” he said.
At another stall, Eli (30) sells typical Chinese New Year decorations in the form of flower arrangements. Small flower arrangements start at IDR350,000, while two-meter-long ones can reach IDR1.3 million. He also sells large lanterns for IDR1 million.
Meanwhile, another vendor, Rian (37), offers packages of angpau at IDR10,000 for three and decorative flowers at IDR120,000 for two.
The Glodok Pancoran Chinatown area has long been known as a center for trading in typical Chinese ornaments every time Chinese New Year approaches.
This area offers prayer equipment, knick-knacks, and culinary specialties that attract people from various cultural backgrounds. As Chinese New Year approaches, the operating hours of the vendors’ stalls also vary.
Some vendors open their stalls from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesian Time), while others choose to operate 24 hours a day to accommodate the surge in customers leading up to the holidays. [antaranews/photo special]
