FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS POTENTIAL TO IMPACT TOURISTS’ CONFIDENCE

FLIGHT disruptions at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport have the potential to impact tourists’ confidence and psychological well-being, particularly in the initial stages of their journey when forming impressions of their destination.

Andalas University tourism observer Sari Lenggogeni, when contacted by ANTARA from Jakarta on Monday, September 2, 2026, stated that flight delays and cancellations are not an isolated problem, but rather a general phenomenon that needs to be examined from the causal factors presented by airlines and aviation authorities.

Travel media report Travel and Tour World recorded 4,284 delays and 95 flight cancellations at a number of Asian airports. According to the report, Soekarno Hatta Airport had the highest number of cancellations, with 20 flights affected. This was followed by Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen (Türkiye) and Tehran Imam Khomeini (Iran), which each had 19 flights canceled.

Sari stated that the flight schedule disruptions, based on the information that is currently circulating, were triggered by weather factors and atmospheric conditions en route to Jakarta, including turbulence on several routes. The impact is expected to be more noticeable in the short to medium term, particularly regarding tourists’ risk perceptions and emotional responses.

“My primary concern is not the impact on the physical environment, but rather the psychological and emotional impact on individuals and communities. “If it is postponed, it is certain that the tourists’ emotions will have an impact, perhaps anger, disappointment, annoyance, fear, or fear of all negative things,” he said.

The airport serves as the starting point for the tourist experience and creates the initial impression for visitors. Disruptions at this stage have the potential to impact the entire travel experience.

This condition can also prompt alterations in tourist behavior, such as reducing the length of trips and making sudden cancellations. These changes can have a significant impact on the demand for hotels and tourist attractions.

“It is a possibility, and it is referred to as behavioral change. “Tourists will opt for other destinations or reduce the length of their vacation or business trips,” he stated.

The General Chair of the Indonesian Tourism Scholars Association (ICPI), Azril Azhari, has stated that travel safety and comfort are the primary requirements for tourists at this time.

Azril informed ANTARA on Monday (02/09) that visitors must be ensured of their safety during their journey to their destination. Flight disruptions can directly impact your sense of security and peace of mind during your travel trip. [antaranews]
