US low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has officially announced that it has gone bankrupt after 34 years of operation. The airline, known for its bright yellow livery, employed approximately 17,000 people and is beginning a phased closure.
According to AP News, said the closure was due to high aviation fuel prices, amid the escalating war between Iran, the United States, and Israel. This ultimately made it impossible for them to continue operating as usual.
On its official website, Spirit Airlines stated that all flights have been cancelled and customer service is no longer available. Some passengers arrived last Saturday for their flights and were surprised to find their flights cancelled. Employees learned they had lost their jobs the night before.
“We have been a proud low-cost carrier for the past 34 years and look forward to serving our guests for many years to come,” Spirit Airlines announced.
According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Spirit has set aside a reserve fund for refunds for customers who purchased tickets directly from the airline. Those who purchased tickets from third-party vendors, such as travel agents, must request refunds from them.
“United, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest are offering US$200 one-way tickets to those with a Spirit confirmation number and proof of purchase for a limited time. Other airlines will also assist Spirit employees who may be displaced and offer a simpler application process as they search for jobs,” Duffy said.
Meanwhile, Spirit Airlines is working to return more than 1,300 crew members to their bases. The last Spirit flight landed at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport from Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
The company said customers can expect refunds, but there will be no assistance in booking travel on other airlines. [sources/photo special]
