DESTINATION CONVENTION MALAYSIA UNITES THE COUNTRY’s MICE SECTOR

MARRIOTT International is collaborating with convention bureaus across Malaysia to position the country as a comprehensive destination offering a wide array of unique event venues.

In partnership with the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), and the Sabah Convention Bureau, Marriott has officially launched “Destination Convention Malaysia.” This platform integrates convention facilities, hospitality services, and local tourism experiences, making it easier for event planners to explore the potential of diverse event concepts throughout the country.

Rather than focusing on a single city or location, the program combines the international accessibility and extensive convention facilities of Kuala Lumpur with the rich culture, natural beauty, and incentive travel experiences found in Sarawak, Sabah, and other Malaysian regions.

This initiative arrives amidst fierce competition among Asia-Pacific destinations vying for the growing market of conventions, corporate meetings, and incentive programs. Beyond venue capacity and accessibility, planners now prioritize factors such as personalization, wellness, sustainability, technology, and authentic local experiences for their attendees.

For Malaysia, this presents an opportunity to leverage its destination diversity as a key competitive advantage. Through Destination Convention Malaysia, regional event planners can more easily tailor venue choices and event experiences to the specific needs and characteristics of their participants.

Malaysia offers a wide range of venues, from urban convention centers and leisure resorts to destinations rich in nature and culture. This provides planners with the flexibility to host everything from large-scale conventions, business meetings, and incentive programs to experience-focused events across the country.

“Regional event planners are increasingly choosing destinations with robust infrastructure that can deliver memorable experiences for attendees beyond the formal agenda,” said George Varughese, Market Vice President for Malaysia, Marriott International.

He explained that Malaysia is well-positioned to meet these needs through its global connectivity, convention facilities, and wealth of cultural and natural assets. Through ‘Destination Convention Malaysia,’ we aim to showcase this potential clearly and make it easily accessible to event planners across the Asia-Pacific region.

This initiative was unveiled at *Malaysia Means Business*, an industry forum hosted by Marriott International at The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur. The event brought together leaders from the business events, destination, and hospitality sectors to discuss strategies for Malaysia to capture a larger share of the regional MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) market.

Senior representatives from Marriott International, MyCEB, BESarawak, and the Sabah Convention Bureau participated in a panel discussion exploring opportunities for Malaysia to expand its footprint in the Asia-Pacific MICE market.

The discussion examined the extent to which regional event planners recognize Malaysia’s strengths and how the country leverages its connectivity, infrastructure, and diverse destinations to reinforce its market position.

Panelists also highlighted the evolving needs of planners and attendees. Beyond technical factors such as accessibility, accommodation, and venue capacity, elements like tailored programming, wellness, sustainability, technology, and destination-immersive experiences now play a pivotal role.

“The strong interest among event planners in hosting business events in Malaysia reflects their confidence in our capabilities. Our focus now is to raise awareness of the diverse offerings available across Malaysia’s various regions,” said Tan Mei Phing, CEO of MyCEB.

“Through ‘Destination Convention Malaysia,’ we are uniting various destinations to highlight the strength of Malaysia’s business events ecosystem while presenting compelling propositions to regional and international event planners,” she added.

As of June 30, 2026, MyCEB has secured 416 events for the 2026–2030 period, with an estimated economic impact of RM3.98 billion. With 65 hotels operating across Malaysia, Marriott International offers event planners in the Asia-Pacific region convenient access to accommodation and event facilities across various business and leisure destinations.

Its network includes major convention centers such as the Marriott Putrajaya International Convention Centre, Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel & Convention Centre, Courtyard by Marriott Kuala Lumpur South, Desaru Coast Conference Center, and the Langkawi International Convention Center.

At various Marriott properties, event planners can combine accommodations and event facilities with culinary experiences, wellness programs, local tours, and a range of other engaging activities. This approach diversifies the event agenda beyond the confines of the meeting room and makes it easier for planners to curate activities that align with attendees’ interests.

Through Destination Convention Malaysia, Marriott International—in collaboration with MyCEB, BESarawak, and the Sabah Convention Bureau—aims to provide regional event planners with a clearer picture of the possibilities, while demonstrating Malaysia’s capacity to support diverse event formats and experiences within a single country.
