Irfan explained that the management is fully committed to always prioritizing transparency to all stakeholders, including the mass media as the company’s strategic partner. The media has an important role in delivering wise, balanced, and comprehensive coverage of the conditions facing the company.

“I also express my appreciation for all forms of opinions expressed by relevant parties regarding the condition of Garuda Indonesia through various channels,” said Irfan.

Furthermore, he asked for an explanation for not being able to provide a response related to the current opinion so as not to create new polemics.

“I personally apologize from the bottom of my heart if in a challenging situation like now I have not been able to reply or answer one by one the questions and confirmations that my media colleagues have conveyed,” Irfan noted.

Based on the latest financial report data released by Garuda Indonesia in the third quarter of 2020, the aviation state-owned enterprise has a debt of IDR98.79 trillion, consisting of short-term debt of IDR32.51 trillion and long-term debt of IDR66.28 trillion.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company had recorded a profit of almost IDR100 billion in 2019. However, the pandemic that hit Indonesia in early 2020 until now has hit the company’s finances.

In the third quarter of 2019, Garuda Indonesia posted a net profit of IDR1.73 trillion, then lost up to IDR15.19 trillion in the third quarter of 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic. Garuda Indonesia’s revenue was recorded to have decreased from an initial IDR50.26 trillion in the third quarter of 2019 to only IDR16.04 trillion in the third quarter of 2020.

The company then offers an early retirement program for employees until June 19, 2021, in order to save the company’s finances which are depressed due to losses and debts. So far, more than 100 employees have applied for early retirement.

In addition to early retirement, a number of actions taken by Garuda Indonesia include maximizing cooperation with business partners to encourage increased income.

Meanwhile, the government plans to cut the number of commissioners for Garuda Indonesia to change the company’s business orientation, which initially served international flight routes to only focus on domestic flights. [antaranews/photo special]
