HYDROGEN IS A CARRIER OF ENERGY FOR INDUSTRY TO TRANSPORTATION

THE MINISTRY of Energy and Mineral Resources directs hydrogen to be one of the energy carriers or potential energy carriers to enter the industrial and transportation sectors.

According to Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Dadan Kusdiana said the use of hydrogen does not use fuel cell technology, but uses internal combustion technology commonly used by motorized vehicles.

“Hydrogen is now directed to become one of the energy carriers with great potential, which can later enter industry and can enter transportation,” said Dadan at a seminar on the transition of energy and mineral resources being monitored in Jakarta, Monday (2/07).

Dadan explained that if hydrogen could be put to good use through this technology, then the industry in Indonesia would not experience too many revolutions.

He said that in the past the government hoped that hydrogen could be used in power plants and motor vehicles with fuel cell technology, but in fact this commodity was not responded well by the market.

The use of hydrogen not only has an impact on national energy security, but also accelerates decarbonization to the economy.

Currently, the government is in the early stages of studies on the development and acceleration of hydrogen investment, which is planned to be implemented in North Kalimantan and North Sumatra. Indonesia will produce hydrogen as an energy carrier together with ammonia from coal.

In the energy transition roadmap to carbon neutral, the first commercial use of hydrogen of 328 megawatts will take place in 2031-2035, then an increase of 332 megawatts in 2036-2040, then utilization of hydrogen by 9,000 megawatts in 2041-2050, and utilization of hydrogen by 52,000 megawatts in 2051-2060.

Executive Director of the Institute for Essential Service Reform (IESR) Fabby Tumiwa said PLN needs to include ammonia and hydrogen commodities in the company’s transition planning.

According to him, today’s technological developments will enable Indonesia to produce ammonia and hydrogen competitively in the next decade. [antaranews/photo special]
