IMT-GT STRENGTHENS CONNECTIVITY AND TOURISM SECTOR IN THREE COUNTRIES

INDONESIAN President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) chaired the 15th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Summit, Thursday (05/11), 2023, at the Meruorah Hotel, Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara.

President Jokowi in his remarks during the IMT-GT expressed his joy that amidst the global situation, in 2021, the IMT-GT volume managed to reach US$618 billion. I also emphasized that in the future the IMT-GT can further encourage the acceleration of inclusive and sustainable economic growth in order to face the various challenges ahead which are not easy.

“Going forward, the IMT-GT must be increasingly capable of accelerating economic growth that is inclusive and sustainable, because the challenges ahead are not easy, uncertainty is still high, competition is still sharp, and the domino effect of global economic shocks is still threatening,” said the President.

Furthermore, the President also encouraged the IMT-GT to strengthen collaboration to accelerate this economic growth. Let’s spread the spirit of collaboration, especially by increasing competitiveness, connectivity, tourism and investment to achieve the vision of the IMT-GT in 2036.

The 15th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Summit is believed to be able to increase connectivity and growth in the tourism sector for the three countries.

Likewise, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno explained that the government had launched the Visit Year IMT-GT 2023-2025 program as a subregion of ASEAN which is expected to involve 10 provinces in Sumatra as well as Southern Thailand and Malaysia.

“With the first three main issues of downstreaming the industry including the tourism industry, as well as strengthening connectivity so that the target can further increase tourist visits,” he said.

Because, said Sandiaga Uno, these three countries are close together both geographically and culturally. “Hopefully, we can achieve the initial target of 60 million tourists by visiting this year and there is a potential for additional US$475 billion in foreign exchange. And Indonesia was asked to be the leader in this visit year.

Sandiaga explained that he would start by directly initiating the program this week in Bangka Belitung and South Sumatra. After that we will come to the 10 provinces in Sumatra including events in Malaysia and Thailand. Also, connectivity between Batam-Bintan and Malaysia-Johor and several other destinations to increase the connectivity of the three countries. [traveltext.id]
