A NUMBER of major airlines are expanding the list of destinations offered in response to the high demand for travel. The airlines expect demand to endure despite the rising cost of living prices and global economic uncertainty.
Most of the major airlines that have announced plans to expand the variety of routes on offer are based in the United States. American Airlines and Delta Airlines both announced that they would be upping the number of routes available, underlining the air travel industry’s faith that the upswing in demand for travel will continue unabated.
Major airlines to offer flights to more travel destinations
American Airlines has revealed plans to enhance its European offerings next summer, introducing three new destinations – Copenhagen, Naples, and Nice – all departing from Philadelphia. Additionally, the airline intends to reinstate flights between Chicago and Venice, a route that had been discontinued four years ago.
Furthermore, American Airlines will extend the duration of seasonal summer flights on select transatlantic routes, mirroring a strategy employed by Delta Airlines this year.
On a similar note, Delta Airlines announced an expansion of its China services. The airline will introduce ten weekly flights to Shanghai from both Seattle and Detroit. This move is notable given the slower recovery of international travel to and from China compared to other regions due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. These announcements by both American Airlines and Delta Airlines reflect their efforts to adapt and expand their services based on strong summer bookings and changing travel trends.

Analysts predict continued strong demand in the tourism sector. Some economic forecasters predicted that the post-pandemic travel boom would start to slow down, especially with high-ticket prices. Thus far, however, demand in the tourism sector remains high. Naturally, this is positive news for airlines.
In the current year, international travel surged to approximately 90% of its pre-pandemic levels, as reported by the International Air Transport Association. This resurgence was primarily driven by travelers from cooler climates visiting Southern Europe, even in the face of high temperatures. A significant portion of these international tourists hailed from the United States.
The number of people opting to holiday abroad may even increase in the coming year, as suggested by the insights of travel technology company Amadeus. Their recent survey unveiled that 47% of participants identified international travel as a prominent priority within discretionary spending for both 2023 and 2024.
This figure represents an increase from the previous year’s 42%. The survey encompassed travelers from various nations, including the UK, France, the United States, Germany, and Singapore. [greekreporter.com/photo special]
