BIAK ESTABLISHES AN UNDERWATER MUSEUM AS A TOURIST ATTRACTION

THE BIAK Numfor Regency Government, Papua, through the Tourism Office, is establishing an underwater museum as a regional leading tourist destination in 2024.

“The application process for establishing an underwater museum has been submitted to the Ministry of Education, Culture (Kemendikbud) and the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment by the Regent Herry Ario Naap at the time of the closure of the Cenderawasih Bay Sail on November 27 2023,” said Head of the Biak Numfor Tourism Service Onny Dangeubun in Biak, Sunday (01/07), 2024.

He explained that the application for a permit for an underwater museum as a Biak Numfor tourism destination had been approved and until now the Tourism Department was still waiting for the issuance of a decision letter from the Ministry of Education and Culture.

If the permit for an underwater museum for a tourist destination has been established, continued Onny, then Biak Numfor Regency will be the only one that already has an underwater museum.

“Yes, the establishment of an underwater museum owned by Biak has received support from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Economy and a number of related ministries in Jakarta,” he said.

Meanwhile, Head of Destinations at the Tourism Office, Berto Sroyer, said that the Biak Tourism underwater museum area includes Padaido/Aimando waters, namely the islands of Nusi, Wundi, Mansorbabo and several other villages.

Berto said that the Biak underwater museum stores various items left over from World War II in the waters of the Padaido/Aimando islands.

He explained various objects from World War II that were found in the waters, such as torpedo nets, car wrecks, American plane wrecks and other accessories. A number of used items left over from World War II, continued Berto, can still be found in the Padaido/Aimando water area, Biak Numfor Regency.

Berto said that the results of data collection on the underwater museum in Biak had great potential to become a leading regional tourist destination in the Land of Papua.

“Moreover, in 2024 the Biak tourism destination will be included in the national priority agenda of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy so that it can increase tourist visits,” hoped Berto. [antaranews/photo special]
