THE MINISTRY of Tourism and Creative Economy held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) “A Tribute to Mas Yos” to commemorate the legacy of Suyoso Karsono, or popularly known as Mas Yos, as a pioneer of the recording industry in Indonesia.
The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, said in his statement that this FGD invited music and radio experts and practitioners to discuss various aspects of Indonesia’s music ecosystem, especially after independence, with a focus on Mas Yos’ role in pioneering the establishment of the recorded music industry and the first private commercial radio station in Indonesia.
“Mas Yos played an important role in the development of the music and radio industry in Indonesia. This FGD aims to remember Mas Yos as a pioneer of recorded music in Indonesia,” said Sandiaga.
Chairperson of the committee for “A Tribute to Mas Yos” Elshinta Suyoso, who was a resource person at the FGD held at Balairung Soesilo Soedarman, Jakarta, Wednesday (08/21), 2024, said that the recorded music and radio industry in Indonesia has gone through a long journey filled with innovation, challenges, and technological disruptions.
“Mas Yos’ role in building and developing this industry is the foundation for many developments that have occurred in the music, recorded music and radio industry in Indonesia,” Elshinta said.
Mas Yos has made a significant contribution to the history of music in this country. He initiated the development of the creative economy in the music world after the independence of the Republic of Indonesia by establishing the first vinyl recording studio in Indonesia, namely Irama Records in 1951, then J&B in 1961, and Elshinta Broadcasting System in 1964.
Mas Yos is also known as a producer, singer, broadcaster and talent developer who has recorded legendary singers and musicians in this country such as Nick Mamahit, Sam Saimun, Titiek Puspa, Mus Mualim, Bing Slamet and many others.
In addition, Mas Yos is also known as the founder of Radio Elshinta on the AM channel and Radio Suara Irama Indah on the FM stereo channel, which are the first two private radio stations that have managed to become an important part of people’s daily lives, especially in the distribution of music and information in Indonesia.
“By reviewing the role of pioneers like Mas Yos and the impact of technological disruption, it is hoped that it can provide further and deeper insight into how this industry can continue to develop and adapt to changing times. Through this discussion, we can learn from the past, understand current challenges and develop future strategies for the recorded music and radio industry in Indonesia,” explained Elshinta.
Likewise, the Director of Industry Management of the Ministry of Tourism, Syaifullah, said that this FGD was held to invite music and radio practitioners to discuss fundamental changes in the management of the recorded music and radio industry.
“These changes have shaped the landscape of the entertainment industry in Indonesia from time to time. There is a need to appreciate the creative works of Mas Yos, which have been able to inspire many people since independence until now,” concluded Syaifullah. [traveltex.id]
