THE WEST Kutai Regency Government’s commitment to improving regional accessibility and connectivity has once again paid off. On Wednesday (06/17), 2026, the inaugural round-trip Wings Air flight from Samarinda–Melak officially operated from Melalan Airport, West Kutai.
This new route is expected to improve public mobility while simultaneously boosting economic growth, public services, investment, and the tourism sector in the Land of Tanaa Purai Ngeriman.
The welcoming ceremony for the inaugural flight was attended by Head of West Kutai Regent Frederick Edwin, local government officials, members of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (FKPD), the Melalan Airport Management Unit (UPBU), Wings Air management, and several invited guests.
In his remarks, Frederick Edwin expressed his appreciation to all parties who contributed to the opening of this flight route.
“We especially appreciate the synergy and collaboration between the West Kutai Regency Transportation Agency, the Melalan Airport Transportation Agency (UPBU), Wings Air, and all relevant stakeholders,” he said.
According to him, the Samarinda-Melak route provides a faster, safer, and more efficient transportation solution for the community. This easy air access is believed to streamline government activities and accelerate the regional economy.
Frederick also encouraged the public to support the continued operation of the route by utilizing it optimally.
“Public support is a crucial factor in ensuring the continued operation of this flight service and providing greater benefits to the region. With this route, investment opportunities and tourism development in West Kutai Regency will be further opened,” he affirmed.
He hopes this inaugural flight will be the first step in strengthening connectivity and supporting the realization of a more prosperous, safe, just, equitable, and civilized West Kutai.
Meanwhile the Head of the Melalan Airport Transportation Agency (UPBU), Bernard R. Purba, expressed similar optimism. He stated that the opening of the Samarinda-Melak route not only adds air transportation options but also serves as a vital link for the community’s economic and social activities.
“This route will strengthen business ties, support the development of the tourism sector, and facilitate community interaction between the two regions. We are confident that the shorter travel time will have a positive impact on local economic growth,” he added.
Bernard added that the successful opening of this route is the result of collaboration between various parties committed to developing air transportation in West Kutai.
