LOCAL CINEMA REQUIRES A SYNERGY BETWEEN THE GOV’T AND PRIVATE SECTOR

THE CINEMA ecosystem in Indonesia needs to be strengthened with support and synergy between the government and the private sector so that it can continue to grow even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a representative from the Directorate of Film, Music and New Media of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Ministry of Education and Culture, Research and Technology) Edy Suwardi said managing Indonesian films is not solely the task of the government, but also the business of related institutions or institutions, local governments, film entrepreneurs, and so on.

Edy said in a webinar at the Indonesian Film Journalists Festival (FFWI) entitled “Opportunities to Develop the Indonesian Film Ecosystem in Indonesia. Pandemic Era”, Friday (8/20).

In that case, Judith J. Dipodiputro as the President Director of State Film Production (PFN) said that his party would try to accelerate the growth of the film and content industry in Indonesia, including the financing segment.

“PFN is a catalyst for the growth of the Indonesian film industry and content industry, including the film industry financing center with many collaborations such as the Telkom Group for start-ups,” said Judith.

Meanwhile, MD Corp CEO Manoj Punjabi explained that film industry players must produce many innovations so that the industry continues to grow even in the midst of a pandemic.

One of them, according to Manoj, is that industry can take advantage of Over the Top (OTT) as an innovation so that connoisseurs of entertainment films, web series, or other content can get the convenience of watching anytime.

“I’m not a pro to OTT but this is a new alternative and the next TV, cinema must still be a priority,” said Manoj.

Likewise WeTV and iflix Indonesia Country Head Lesley Simpson also agrees that the current film industry needs to be revived through OTT.

“This is also in line with WeTV’s dream and vision and mission, which wants to bring Indonesian films to the world. We want the film industry to rise through the OTT opportunity from webseries to films when cinemas are still closed,” he said.

Then, Edy hopes that film in Indonesia can continue to develop not only as a means of entertainment, but also as a medium for education and diplomacy of Indonesian culture in the eyes of the world. [antaranews/photo special]
